The Badave.com Mission

Welcome to the badave.com Mission Statement Page. You are probably wondering what on Earth could we mean by the badave.com mission, and that is why this page exists.

Badave.com is a user oriented site aimed at bringing light to the art of parody, comedy, satire, and novelty music. Simple as it sounds, some people have a problem with people having fun with music. There was a time when artist integrity was more important than the almighty dollars and euros that fuel the music industry now. We don't pretend that writers, singers, musicians and such don't deserve to be fairly compensated when their productions and work are used to make a profit, however it is the position of our company that it has simply gotten out of hand. It is one thing to say that a radio station, band, or business must pay royalties to use a finished product in order to make a profit. However, when people cannot parody or satire a work, which has historically been part of our fabric, even in cases of non-profit or educational work without paying royalties, we believe it has gone to far.

In our opinion, and the opinion of many of our visitors, ASCAP, and other performing rights organizations as well as the RIAA should not have the power to force royalty payments for parody or satire productions that are not covers. We feel that parody should be defined as any work that is significantly altered from the original work to meet a new purpose, usually comedious, so long as it does not serve as a substantial substitute to the original work in question.

Things have gone to far when people are no longer allowed to have fun with music. Music is not just in the background, it is an integral part of our lives, but the music industry has gotten so much power over the years that no one can really stand up to them. Badave.com used to post parodies on our site for listening pleasure, and hopefully someday will again, but at this time we must remain more of an information site with our radio show hosted elsewhere to avoid having to pay licensing fees that as a non-profit we simply cannot afford. Again we aren't talking about playing the original works, we are talking about parodies, satires, and other similar work. Works that are similar to the originals in question, and in fact inspired by, but significantly different from the original. The United States has a mixed history on this plight, but ASCAP doesn't recognize parody as any different from a cover even though by both legal and actual defnition they are not the same.

If you agree with our opinion, please Sign our Petition.

Being that things are not likely to change quickly, we also are accepting donations in order to hopefully someday soon bring back badave to full strength and help parodists share their work with the world.

Thank you for your time.
